Morning journal prompts when on retreat

Journaling on retreat has become one of my foundational practices. There is not better time to journal, you have zero distractions, you are up early, with a hot water and lemon, the sound of morning birdsong surrounds you and the warm air wraps around you. Allowing yourself to drop into the practice of journaling is so rewarding, it’s so much more than just a list of what you’re grateful for, it’s more a practice of awareness and deep listening.

Here are my favourite retreat journaling prompts, a practice of becoming aware of how you are feeling each morning, how this is shifting through the retreat experience and what arises in these beautiful morning practices.

1. Reflect on the sunrise meditation: Describe the colors, sensations, and thoughts that arose during your morning meditation as the sun illuminated the yoga retreat space.

2. Gratitude for the body: Write about the ways in which your body feels nourished and rejuvenated after the morning yoga session, acknowledging its strength and flexibility.

3. Intentions for the day: Set positive intentions for the day ahead, focusing on how you want to carry the peaceful and centered energy from your morning practice into various activities.

4. Nature connection: Capture your observations of the natural surroundings during a mindful walk or outdoor yoga session, expressing gratitude for the beauty of the retreat setting.

5. Mindful breakfast: Reflect on the flavors, textures, and nourishment of your morning meal, emphasizing the connection between mindful eating and overall well-being.

6. Emotional check-in: Explore and jot down any emotions or insights that surfaced during the morning yoga practice, allowing yourself to process and release any tension or stress.

7. Journaling through asanas: Detail your experience with specific yoga poses, noting how each one made you feel physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

8. Personal growth reflections: Consider any personal growth or self-discoveries that have emerged during the retreat, acknowledging the transformative power of both yoga and the serene environment.
